Anglia Ruskin University,
who already offer their own judo degree, are now opening a new
dojo in a joint venture with Comberton Judo Club and Comberton
Village College who have developed the faciltiy on their site.
Until September the dojo
will be used primarily by Comberton Judo Club and then a selection
of members from the outfit will train alongside the students as
Anglia Ruskin launches their full-time training programme.
A year later the University
will recruit a full-time coach, a strength and conditioning coach
and provide full-time opportunities to sixth form students from
Comberton Village College who have led the development of the
new facility.
Bob Challis, head coach
at Anglia Ruskin and Comberton Judo Club, said: “Two key concepts
evident in the research in talent development is that athletes
need to complete around 20 hours of training per week to be classed
as full-time, and also there are key transitional periods in athletes
careers, namely moving to sixth form and moving from sixth form.
“We hope that by linking
the full-time training programme across the sixth form and the
university we will be able to provide support and training.
“It has taken several years
to get to where we are now, opening the dojo really is phase one,
as we work towards the development of a world class programme,”
added the European Judo Union High Performance Level 5 coach.
The University’s highly-regarded
judo club won the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) men’s
title at the team championships in March and will stage a star-studded
session on Saturday 4 June to launch the dojo.
To mark the occasion three
Olympic hopefuls from Camberley Judo will act as guest coaches
and receive all the proceeds from the event towards their 2012
training and preparations.
Former world champion Craig
Fallon will be joined by four-time European Champion Karina Bryant
and Commonwealth Champion Sam Lowe.
The session will start
at 10am and participants wil be split into three groups based
upon age and gender. Each group will have a session with each
guest coach and will also take part in randori.
The event will cost £15
per person and any further donations to support these players
would be graciously recieved. Participation is limited to 50 judoka
on a first come first served basis.
Any judoka that would
like to participate should contact Bob Challis on combertonjudoclub@yahoo.com
with details of their age and gender.
