A famous Yorkshire judo
club is on the rise again after receiving a £9,460 grant from
Sport England.
In the 80’s Barnsley Judo
Club was one of the most successful judo clubs in England as it
produced a host of elite judoka including 1984 Los Angeles Olympian
Steve Gawthorpe.
The club reformed in
2010 and already have North England and South Yorkshire champions
among their ever-growing and fast-rising ranks.
The grant will be used
to purchase new mats, judo suits, and fund training courses for
coaches as well as club marketing.
Barnsley Judo Club was
nominated last year for community club of the year, club of the
year and coach of the year prizes at the South Yorkshire Sports
Awards.
The club, who are led
by respected head coach Eddie Newton, has established links with
local schools to build community links and the numbers on the
mat through the British Judo Association’s Schools 2 Dojo programme.
Jeff Hynds, Regional Development
Officer for British Judo, said: “Barnsley Judo club have been
a very proactive club. Since restarting they have registered for
Clubmark and have done a lot of work in and around the local area
to get their name out.
“When a club wishes to
do so much it makes my job a lot easier but at the same time they
keep me busy and I am more than happy to support them going forward.
Their successful small grants bid will help them immensely but
it is a deserved reward for the work that the club have done so
far.”
Barnsley Judo Club meets
on a Monday (18:15-19:45) at Holgate School Sports College for
a junior session. On a Thursday training takes place at Shaw Lane
Sports Club with juniors (18:30-20:00) followed by seniors (20:00-21:45).
