South Holderness Technology College receive British Schools Championships Trophy

South Holderness Technology College has been presented with the Overall Winner Trophy for the 2010

British Schools National Judo Championships for winning the most gold and silver medals collectively.

At the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Saturday, 20 th March, the college achieved an impressive medal haul of two gold, one silver and one bronze.

Harry Inman and Zoe Hebden won gold in the Years 7/8/9 competition. The 12-year-old’s triumphed in the under 38kg and 48kg categories respectively.

Two further medalists emerged from the Years 10/11 competition with Tamsin Nayomi Hartley, 14, taking silver in the under 48kg category and Thomas Hebden, 15, completing the haul with a bronze in the under 55kg category.

The presentation was made on Tuesday, 4 th May, by British Judo’s Yorkshire Development Officer Jeff Hynds, to headteacher Martin Cooper and head of P.E Tim Harris.

Harris said: “I'm delighted that we have come out as the top school and we're all very proud of the students.

“They invest a lot of time in the sport and their dedication has really paid off.

“However, I don't think we can take the credit. Three of the young players are members of Karen Inman MBE School of Judo.”

Inman, a four-time world champion in the 1980’s, takes a great deal of pride in seeing her students claim top honours including her talented son Harry.

“Three of the college’s medallists are from my school including our son Harry who won gold,” she said.

“They all started judo with us in primary school and continued through into our Centre of Excellence base. We have now been teaching judo in schools for over 20 years.

“It’s brilliant to see a child come through this system from approximately 7 years of age to eventually gaining a place on the England Talent Development Squad of which we have four players.”

The 1990 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, who’s still regarded as one of most decorated female players in British judo history, has a strong link with the college.

“We do have a good relationship with the College as both of our children study there.”

Karen Inman MBE School of Judo train at Mitchell Community Centre, Fountain Road, Hull, HU2 0BQ. Men and women as well as boys and girls train on Monday and Thursday at 19:00 – 20:15.
