Croydon Judo Club to host Beijing team

Croydon Judo Club is set for a flying visit from a Beijing team this month as their counterparts look to sample the Olympic sport in London.

The Clubmark Bronze outfit have prepared a five-day training camp across the capital with their visitors due to arrive on Wednesday 24 November.

On Thursday evening they’ll be training at the Budokwai, Britain’s oldest and most famed judo club, while on Friday the Chinese fighters will have their first taste of Croydon Judo Club.

After a second night at the hosts’ dojo on the Friday the visitors will take part in a three-way match with representatives of Surrey and London on Saturday.

On Sunday, Andrew Moshanov, a former Russian international and coach, will lead a mass participation session from 10:00 – 12:30 with a final training session due to be confirmed for Monday.

In October Croydon hosted long-time friends Harris Judo Club and their guests A.S.D Jigoro Kano from Italy.

Their latest camp come about when club coach Alan Rickard, a distinguished 6th Dan and top-class referee, received an enquiry after Olympic information specialists London Go South Go passed on their details at a Beijing pre-Games test event in 2007.

The International A Licence referee said: “We have tried to make a schedule that enables our visitors to enjoy the city and some high-level judo. The idea is that we’ll establish an exchange link and go out to China in the future.”

Karen Roberts, British Judo’s Performance Operations Manager, said: “This is a very good opportunity for both parties and I’m sure Croydon Judo Club will be excellent hosts.”

The club are looking for training partners for the weekend sessions and anyone interested can contact Alan Rickard on 07770 467034.

Croydon Judo Club train at 38 Morland Avenue, Surrey, CRO 6EA. Men and women train on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 20:00 – 21:30. Boys and girls train on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 18:30 – 20:00.
