Kamiko Judo Club and neighbours
Akitas Judo Club flew the flag for Britain at the Judo Tori international
tournament in Jodoigne, Belgium on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 April.
They were joined by fellow
Essex outfit Samurai Judo Club and Norfolk pair of Kumo Judo Club
and Wymondham Judo Club.
Kamiko organised the trip
which featured a 51-strong travelling party of which 30 were competing
judoka.
The group left Essex at
2am on Friday morning and travelled to Dover to catch the ferry
to Calais and then drove to Jodoigne after a sightseeing stop
in Genk.
On Saturday the senior
ne-waza (groundwork) competition took place, a groundwork only
event which sees judoka use hold downs and submissions to win
their contests while keeping at least one knee in contact with
the mat at all times.
Akitas head coach Adam
Hutchins took gold in the over 100kg category before moving down
to -100kg to take silver in the main competition where Akitas’
Charlotte Newbold claimed bronze and club colleague Cameron Harvey
clinched a silver medal.
Kamiko claimed an impressive
13 medals with Adam Hutchins’ brother Ricky and Sam Deane opening
their account with bronze medals in the ne-waza competition.
Club coach George Martin
took silver in the main competition along with George Griffiths,
Kurtis Peck, Flynn Redwin and his brother Callum.
Bronze medals went to Lana
Deane, Ben Griffiths, Harry Cooper, Keiron Coulson, Rowan Coulson
and Keiron Marriot.
Samurai’s Charlotte Plane
took gold while Wymondham’s Adam Claydon scored ne-waza bronze
and club colleague Kiya Claydon clinched silver in the main competition.
Kumo’s Jonathan Drane picked
up ne-waza gold while Martham Judo Club’s Gemma Thomas won bronze
in the main competition to complete the party’s medal haul.
Silver medallist George
Martin said: “Everyone would like to give a massive thanks to
Ricky and Debbie Hutchins who run Kamiko Judo club and organised
our travel to the competition.
“Kamiko are now preparing
for our next trip which will see us head to Marseille in June
for a team event.”
