Bournemouth’s Nokemono
Judo Club staged the inaugural gymnastics for judo course on Sunday
24 October which represents one of six modules on the British
Judo Association’s new Judo Fitness award for coaches.
The award is being developed
as part of the Shape for Success initiative and other modules
include flexibility for judo, strength and condition and the enterprising
National Governing Body’s new fitness class Judo Fit.
British Judo’s Widening
the Market Manager Joyce Heron, a noted 6th Dan who competed at
the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, is leading the introduction
of the award.
“Judo
is a very demanding sport which requires a player to develop various
physical attributes in order to perform to their potential be
it at a recreational or competitive level,” said the Scot.
“The
award will endeavour to work with coaches and instructors to raise
the physical standards of the judo players while under their tuition,
to help them avoid unnecessary injury and enable them to practise
or compete optimally at their particular level.
Gymnastics
for judo is designed to develop good body control and awareness
in younger players.
“The
aim is to utilise gymnastic activities and processes to enable
young players to perform more efficiently, technically and competitively
in our sport, from grassroots through to future elite level.”
British
Judo’s South West Technical Officer Sandra Klinger said: “We received
really good feedback from the coaches as we went into detail about
how to correct and how to teach on different levels, from easy
to more complex movement, which was really helpful for them.
“Most of the coaches really
can see the link the judo in terms of flexibility and coordination
is gymnastics which is a really good foundation for judo.”
Nokemono
Judo Club coach Peter Anderson said: “I'm a big believer in the
gymnastic and aerobic side of judo; I think it's a real benefit
to all players but especially those who start young and those
who compete.
“I've
taught a bit of gymnastics in my classes for about 15 years now
and I believe that the gymnastics helps build speed, flexibility,
core stability, reaction time, and confidence.”
Nokemono
Judo Club train at Sir David English Sport Centre, Bournemouth,
BH8 9PZ. Children train on a Saturday at 11:00 – 12:00 and are
followed by men and women on the mat at 12:00 – 13:00. Children
train on a Wednesday at 19:00 – 20:00 while men and women train
on the same night at 20:00 – 21:00.
