Kent’s Headcorn Judo Club
will host a master class with former World and European Champion
Craig Fallon on Saturday 22nd May.
The thriving club, who
only launched in 2007, will welcome Fallon on the day of their
annual competitions and awards ceremony.
Club secretary Jane Armstrong
said: “To have Craig at the club for the day will be enormously
exciting for our village in general and for our members in particular.”
Fallon, 27, has taken a
break from competing since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, having firmly
established himself as one of the finest players of his generation.
The much-admired Englishman joined the legendary Neil Adams as
only the second male British judoka to hold a World and European
title simultaneously, having won the crowns in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
A highly-anticipated visit
from Fallon will be a great honour for the club who have quickly
established themselves as one of the most active clubs in the
region.
“The master class with
Craig will be just one event on the day but it’s also the day
of our annual competition and our annual awards ceremony so he’ll
be able to watch the finals and present awards too,” said Armstrong.
“It’s a great privilege
to welcome someone of Craig’s stature to our club and the opportunity
to learn from him will be invaluable for our players.”
Hosting the two-time Olympian
is the latest sign of the club’s rising profile and increased
activity as they continue to become a visible presence in their
community.
“We are a small club but
make up for it with enthusiasm. Traditionally, the Olympic sport
of judo has not been widely offered in the Weald.
“The club is run by Richard
Armstrong who was in the Olympic squad with Neil Adams.
Last year British Judo Association’s Chairman Densign White came
to see the club and we also attracted attention by sending all
our members to the Judo World Cup in Birmingham.”
The club, who are members
of the British Judo Association, also features Kent's first UKCC
Level 2 coach, the newly-qualified John Meyer.
Craig Fallon’s class will
be open to members and non-members as for one of the biggest days
in their short history.
