Sport England grant paves way for new satellite judo club

Kumo Judo Club has received a significant cash injection from Sport England towards developing a new satellite club in Crowfield.

The club, which is home to highly-rated British international Colin Oates, has received a £7778 grant to support the growth of their sister club at Debenham Leisure Centre.

Kumo originally developed a school satellite club in Debenham in 2202 but due to a lack of mats and coaching availability had to close down what was a highly-successful class as judoka went on to represent the Eastern Area at competitions in Ireland and Belgium and went to achieve their Dan grades.

David Oates, brother of Colin and an Enjoy Judo coach for the British Judo Association, will lead the sessions at the new club.

“I will be coaching the session and hoping to expand the numbers thanks to the Enjoy Judo Programme again which has helped to build school-club links in the local area.

“The club started at Crowfield Village Hall but was forced to move to Debenham due to the lack of good storage space and has gradually grown in membership since the move.

Many players at the club have only just started but are already targeting success at this year’s Suffolk Youth Games in July.”

Kumo Judo Club (Crowfield) train at Gracechurch Street, Debenham, Stowmarket, IP14. Training takes place on Tuesday at 18:30 – 19:30 for juniors aged 5-11 and 19:30 – 20:30 for Juniors aged 12-16
