Alton Judo Club’s Petra
Piears won Master Sportsperson of the Year at the 2011 Hampshire
and Isle of Wight Sports Awards which took place at Southampton
Football Club.
The annual celebration
of sport is a joint venture between Hampshire County Council,
Sport Hampshire and Isle of Wight along with the Local Sports
Councils and Forums in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
More than two hundred athletes,
coaches, officials, volunteers, teams and clubs were put forward
to receive an award after a record number of entries.
Petra, who won her fourth
Masters world title in Canada last year, has passed her level
2 coaching qualification and regularly passes on her expertise
to members at Alton Judo Club.

Speaking at the event,
Councillor Keith Chapman said: “The event has been a fantastic
celebration of sport throughout our county. The shortlisted nominees
and winners reflect not only the quality of local sporting achievement,
but also the incredible dedication and commitment of the many
unsung heroes – the coaches, volunteers and officials who together
make Hampshire and the Isle of Wight such a great county to participate
in and enjoy sport.”
The Awards benefitted from
the support of a number of local businesses and organisations
who came together to help share the celebration of local sporting
excellence. The event was featured on BBC Radio Solent in the
build up to the event, the venue was supported by Halo Conferences
at Southampton Football Club, whilst support was also received
from Active Nation, Biscoes Solicitors, Coaching Hampshire &
IOW, Hampshire 2012, Promo Logo, Sport Structures and Toucan Design.
