Ronindo Budo Kai dominates Devon Junior Championships

Ronindo Budo Kai stole the headlines at the Devon Junior Judo Championships as they claimed 24 medals at the Quayside Leisure Centre, Kingsbridge, on Sunday 13 February.

For the second year running Ronindo topped the individual’s medal table with their impressive 24-medal haul as they took four county titles, eight silver medals and 12 bronze.

Many categories were combined which saw a host of Ronindo members fighting heavier opponents.

In the under 12’s category gold medals went to Charlie Warren and Sophie Fisher while the under 16 field produced top honours for Holly Fear and Billy Fox-Coates.

The club also excelled in the event’s team championships which saw the girls team take first place while the boys battled well to take third-place.

The girl’s team featured Amy Allen, Scarlet Hodge, Nayana Aitkin-Smith, Sophie Fisher, and Lauren Thomas along with Charlie Bond and Holly Fear while Celestine Stilwell and Bracken Lockett were reserves.

Ronindo’s boy’s team consisted of Ben Bassett, Robert Stephens, Roo Daly, Kieran Nash, Oliver Smith and Otis Skitch along with Billy Fox-Coates, Otto Conroy and Yoran Shepherd with Shaun Rowe-Wills, Oliver Latto and James Foy as reserves.

The event culminated with Holly Fear winning the Devon County Judo Association Female Junior Player of the Year award for her outstanding efforts in 2010.

Holly started the year by captaining the Western Area girl’s team to gold at the West of England Team Fest, followed by gold medals at a collection of events including Devon Mini Mons, Devon Closed, The Plymouth Open and the Peter Murphy Championships.

Ronindo head coach Ray Brown said: “Holly has achieved gold in her last seven competitions and continues to get better and better. She is successful because she works hard at her training and sticks to the plan at competitions. Holly is an inspiration to her fellow Ronindo members. We have high hopes for her at this year’s Schools Championships in Sheffield.”

On the back of Ronindo’s success and in particularly the clubs development into the strongest girls club in Devon, head coach Ray Brown has recently been appointed as Devon County Girls Coach.

“I am really looking forward to joining the coaching team and raising the profile of the girls Judo in Devon and the South West,” he said.
