Club Secretary Beth Wood said: “This is great news for South Shields Judo Club to have amongst its ranks two 6th Dans. Tom and Joe are great ambassador's for the sport of judo, giving up a great deal of their own personal time for no reward.

“Tom has imparted traditional values such as respect and self-discipline over numerous years to countless judoka and he continues to promote more modern values such as equality and diversity. It is a testament to him that personal success on the judo mat has not been at the expense of his commitment towards South Shields Judo Club, which continues to flourish.”

"Of our juniors members only four youngsters had previously done judo so we’re attracting a lot of youngsters into the sporting field and opening the door for them to go on to success in the Olympic sport of judo.

"We run six weekly sessions over four days and Tom attends and coaches every week, which really emphasises his commitment to his beloved sport and is a fantastic opportunity for him to pass his experience and knowledge on to our younger players.”
