Southend Rugby starlets take to judo

Southend Rugby Club’s under-15 team has started cross-training with their judo counterparts at Akitas Judo Club.

The session was staged by Akitas’ feeder outfit Shudo after the well-known rugby team heard about the club’s recent work with Leigh Ramblers FC.

The Olympic sport has been successfully embraced at the highest level of international rugby. Former world champion and Olympic silver medallist Kate Howey worked with the 2007 Rugby World Cup-winning England team while the all-conquering Guinness Premiership outfit Leicester Tigers have integrated judo to their training.

Akitas Head Coach Adam Hutchins said: "We were delighted to stage these sessions for Southend Rugby Club and enjoyed giving them an introduction to judo.

"Judo is well-known for its physical benefits; the sport caters for all and can develop core stability, stamina, strength, balance, and footwork."

Andrew Wilesmith, British Judo's Eastern Regional Development Officer, said: "Akitas is a fantastic environment to practice judo and I'm pleased to see a fellow Essex sports club enjoying and benefiting from practicing judo."

Akitas Southend Judo Club train at Southend Leisure & Tennis Centre, Garon Park, Eastern Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, Essex SS2 4FA. For more information please visit www.akitasjudo.com
