St Albans Judo Club teams up with the British Heart Foundation

St Albans Judo Club has teamed up with the East of England Ambulance Service and the British Heart Foundation to provide free emergency life support training to the community.

The Clubmark bronze outfit, who formed in 1950, will deliver the British Heart Foundation’s Heartstart scheme, an independent lifesaving programme which has already equipped 2.6 million people with emergency life support skills (ELS).

The Heartstart scheme includes skills such as assessing an unconscious patient, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and helping someone that maybe having a heart attack.

St Albans’ honorary secretary Claire Lish said: “We were doing a review of all of our first aid provision at the club and my husband Matthew is a State Registered Paramedic and HSE/OFQUAL First Aid Trainer.  As a part of this review he thought it would be great to get involved in Heartstart and teach all of our members the essential skills to save a life, and to reach out to the local community.

“As a Heartstart organisation we have already trained an army of club volunteers to instruct members of the public in the vital skills to save lives. We are in fact the largest group in Hertfordshire.  The courses we can run are suitable for ages 8 years and upwards, and we also have a schools pack that we use for the youngsters.”

The club will host a launch event on Saturday 26 February with an open morning starting at 11am followed by the club’s first Heartstart course at 2pm.

“We are delighted to announce our launch event and encourage everyone to bring along their friends and family,” said Claire.

“This month is the 50th Anniversary of the British Heart Foundation, and so we are very excited to be involved, hopefully raise some funds, and also welcome the local community to our club.

“We also hope to cascade this throughout the judo community - so if clubs are interested in becoming Heartstart groups, we would be delighted to share our experiences.”

The free event will also feature a judo workshop which will be led by the club’s instructors.
