2010 Tonbridge Camp sparks global interest

Judo players from across the world will descend on Kent in December as they take part in a four-day training camp in Tonbridge.

As an annual fixture for many of the sports leading nations, this year’s event will include players from Japan, China, Holland, Austria and Ukraine.

The camp, which is supported by Kent Sports Development, is open to all players with cadet, junior and young senior forming the core of the participants.

Britain will also be represented on the mat as teams from Scotland, London, the Midlands and the Southern Area are all due to take part.

The reputation of the camp is such that hosts Tonbridge Judo Club are already at full capacity with a team from Canada now opting to reserve their place for 2011. A waiting list is available for those still looking to take part next month.

Tonbridge will open the camp on Saturday 18 December with two randori sessions. A further two engagements on the mat will take place on Sunday and Monday, the latter also seeing former European Champion Alexei Budolin take a master class for coaches and more experienced players.

A popular ne-waza competition will once again feature with the final training session to take place on the Tuesday morning.

Club volunteer Joanna Yeats-Brown, who’s the mother of British international and regular camp participant Katie-Jemima, is helping stage the event.

“Chris Bowles, Carl Finney and I are running the camp as a partnership, they have the vision while I’ll administrate,” said the 2nd Dan.

“The aim was always to bring top quality international judoka to Britain in preparation for the junior and senior trials in January.”

The camp costs £15 a session, £25 a day or £60 for the whole camp. Accommodation can be booked locally at the Premier Inn in Hildenborough or at Vauxhall.

Food will be of the same high standard with a traditional English pudding thrown in on the Sunday and there will also be free t-shirts and pens for residential players.
