Vale Judo Club launch academy for students

British Judo’s Club of the Year, Vale Judo Club, have linked up with the Rutland School Sports Partnership to launch a judo academy for students.

Rutland Schools Judo Academy will see primary, secondary and college students from the county benefit from regular sessions in term time and after school as well as courses and camps during school holidays.

The Academy, which will be registered as a new club with the British Judo Association, will take over the highly-successful Primary Schools Judo Programme which is now in its fourth year.

Students have to apply to join the Academy before the end of November and those who are selected and eligible will be expected to compete at the British Schools National Championships in March 2011.

The newly-established outfit will also be looking to create links with high-profile sports universities and training centres across the country as well as schools in the sport’s homeland of Japan.

Additionally, the Academy plans to use the latest video analysis technology for players and coaches to review their efforts.

Mike Newton, Vale Judo and RSJA Head Coach, said: “The Rutland Primary Schools Judo Programme continues to be successful in nurturing a strong group of young talented judo players each year.

“Over 50 hours extra coaching over six months is exactly what these judo players need to help them improve their judo skills and give them a good chance of winning medals at the British Schools Championships and beyond.”

Chris Thomas, Rutland School Sports Partnership Development Manager, said: “Rutland SSP and Vale Judo Club have worked hard to develop judo in the county and the academy will provide a useful step for talented students to continue to develop in the sport.

“The timing and frequency of the coaching sessions will ensure that these students are helped to reach their full potential in the sport.

“This initiative shows just how much can be achieved if schools and community clubs can work together to help introduce sport to students and nurture those students that show a talent for the sport.”

In addition to offering “introduction to judo” for five to six week programmes for primary and secondary schools throughout the county, the Rutland Schools Judo Academy is offering an opportunity for talented students (in year six or above) to participate in extra high quality coaching sessions.

RSJA will start the programme on Wednesday afternoons (4-6pm) from January 2011.
