Vale Judo Club youngster
Holly Newton won three out of four contests at the Budo Nord Cup
in Sweden on Thursday 2 June to claim a well-deserved silver medal.
Over 400 judoka took part
in the 2011 Budo Nord Cup and the post-event training camp hosted
by Lugi Judo Club in Lund including junior national squad players
from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands.
Holly, 13, who holds a
3rd Kyu grade, fought in the combined -57kg and -63kg category
which saw her battle against heavier and higher graded judoka.
The Rutland player defeated
Denmark’s Sif Boujo, Hungary’s Maria Pataki and Sweden’s Leila
Melcher who as a 1st Kyu is two grades higher than the young Briton.
Holly’s three wins equalled
that of her first victim Sif Boujo but the Dane amassed more points
in her four fights to narrowly clinch the gold medal.

Holly said: “I was disappointed
to miss out on the gold, as I beat the gold medallist in the pools,
but I was really pleased to perform so well at this level of competition.”
Mick Newton, Vale Judo
Club’s head coach and Holly’s father, said: “We really enjoy competing
in Scandinavia and have made many friends there over the years.
“Our friends from Molkom
Judo Club are coming to visit us this week for the Nottinghamshire
Open which takes place on Sunday 12 June and have invited us to
their local camp in Karlstad in November."
