Walderslade Judo Club were
among the winners at the prestigious Medway Council Sports Awards
as they claimed two awards.
In the Junior Club of the
Year category the highly-regarded outfit saw off stiff competition
from five other clubs from sports such as basketball and gymnastics
to claim the coveted award.
Club founder and secretary
Eddie Orgee said: “We’ve gone from strength to strength over the
last couple of years, increasing membership, the number of coaches
and training opportunities.”

Walderslade also picked
up the Unsung Hero Award as Eddie’s 81-year-old mother and club
stalwart, Frances Orgee, received a richly deserved honour.
“Frances was a well-loved
figure at the club and when she moved away the club held a presentation
and surprise party for her with many club members past and present
attending to show their appreciation for all her efforts over
the years,” said Eddie.
“Frances had been back
for a long weekend visit and was really shocked when she found
out she had been nominated and then short-listed for the award."
As holders of a Clubmark
bronze, a national accreditation recognised by the British Judo
Association and Sport England, Walderslade have made success a
habit this year after taking two gold medals and a silver at a
major junior event in Holland and added a further three medals
at the British Championships in October.
The club has worked closely
with the Greenacre School Sports Partnership to offer taster days
throughout the year and has opened a new satellite club for children
with special needs at a nearby special needs school.
Walderslade also hosts
its own annual international training event where local youngsters
are able to train with their counterparts from France and Holland
and work with top instructors such as former Russian international
Andrew Moshanov.
