Welsh Judo’s Masters squad
will stage a memorial training session in Brecon on Saturday 4
June to pay tribute to former European Champion Elvis Gordon who
lost his battle with cancer at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton
on Friday.
The much-loved Gordon,
52, was one of the most recognisable and charismatic figures in
British judo and was as widely known for his gentle temperament
as his heavyweight accomplishments.
Elvis dominated the domestic
heavyweight scene before lighting up the world stage as he claimed
world championships silver in 1987, a year before winning the
European Championships.
The father of five competed
in the Los Angeles, Seoul and Barcelona Olympics Games before
retiring in 1992. Elvis returned at the British Masters Championships
in 2009 where he clinched a silver medal.
“The Welsh Masters are
saddened at the death of the much loved and respected judo legend
Elvis Gordon,” said Welsh Judo Masters coach Phill Jones.
“As a mark of respect we
have arranged a Masters training event to demonstrate our respect
for Elvis and to raise funds for the British Judo Association’s
Elvis Gordon Testimonial Fund which has already raised over £10,000
for his family.
“Elvis will be missed but as a true sporting giant his legacy
remains with us. You can support the memory of Elvis Gordon by
attending this event which is open to judo players of all abilities
over the age of 29.”
The session will take place
from 12:30 – 14:30 at Brecon Leisure Centre, LD3 9SR. More information
is available on the Welsh Masters facebook page.
