Clean sweep at Visually Impaired European Championships

The 2009 VI European Championships in Debrecen, Hungary at the weekend has proven to be the most successful ever for the British team.

The entire squad, both the senior and junior, medalled, scooping an astounding three silver and two bronze medals.

Brothers Joe and Sam Ingram returned with a silver and bronze.  Paralympic bronze medallist Sam breezed through his first round beating Inigo Gerboles of Spain. But in the in the semi final the Brit couldnt get past Russian Paralympic gold medallist Oleg Kretsul leaving the Edinburgh Judo Club fighter to face Oleska Pominov of Ukraine in the repechage. Sam won the fight, which awarded him the bronze medal and the second European medal of his career.

Joe achieved his best result since returning to the sport after a two year gap by winning a silver medal. Joe, competing in the -100kg category, had a bye in the first round. The second round saw him overpower Gerald Rollo of France, and then beat Antoly Vlasov of Russia in the third round to put him into the final against Karim Sardarov of Azerbaijan. Joe fought well, but couldn’t get past the Beijing Paralympic silver medallist, and had to settle for silver.

Also winning silver, -60kg fighter Ben Quilter took his fourth European Championship medal. Quilter beat Jeyhun Muradov of Azerbaijan, Yasin Onel of Turkey and Ihor Zasyadkovych of Ukraine in the preliminary rounds, before losing to Paralympic bronze medallist Ramin Ibrahimov in the final.
