Day two of the 2010 British Championships

On the second day of competition at the 2010 British Championships the pre-cadet girls, junior men and junior women took to the mat.

The day saw some close finals and encouraging performances from Britain’s young judoka.

Just to mention a few, in the pre-cadet girls competition, proud parents of Chelsie Giles from the Midlands sat in the spectator area cheering her on in the -40kg final. Giles fought hard and won the gold medal adding to her brother’s medal at the British Championships for 10 & 11 year olds two weeks before.

In the -57kg category, Lubjana Piovesana, also from the Midlands, won the gold medal. Earlier this year, Piovesana didn’t look out of place at a training camp in Italy alongside many 16-year-olds from across Europe preparing for the Junior Europeans, despite being a pre-cadet.

In the junior men’s competition, there was a close final between Adam Conroy of London and Lucas Rowe of the Midlands in the -60kg competition. Conroy won the gold medal in the -55kg weight category at the event last year, and Rowe won the 2010-60kg final. Conroy recently took a gold medal at the 2010 Sainsbury’s UK School Games and struck again, winning the gold medal.

Taking the -81kg title was James Gallagher, a budding star at Wolverhampton Judo Club. Gallagher overcame Scotland’s Conall McGregor, who won a silver medal at the 2010 Bremen International.

In the junior women’s competition, -48kg judoka Freya Dechastelain retained her title as national Champion. The Wolverhampton Judo Club fighter recently won a bronze medal at the 2010 Junior Europeans and again showed a strong performance on home soil.

In the -52kg final, two Northern Home County fighters came head to head. Chloe Jackson overcame Sarah Pang once again, this time by flags, and repeated her British Championship gold medal. Pang comes from a line of British Championship medallists, and joins her three other siblings to see success at the event.

As the event drew to a close, the 52 medallists of the 2010 British Championships were congratulated on their performances and the spectators were proud to see some of Britain’s top young talent competing in Sheffield.
