Adlington and Oates pick up points at World Cups

GB’s Sarah Adlington won her second World Cup bronze medal for 2010 at the Bucharest World Cup, adding to her bronze medal win at the Sofia World Cup earlier this year.

Elsewhere Colin Oates, who competed as part of a seven-strong men’s team at the Madrid World Cup, took a 5th place.

Competing as part of a five-strong women’s team in Romania on the weekend of the 5th -6th June, Adlington was the only medal winner.

The Brit won her first two fights against Ksenia Chibisova of Russia and Beatrice Reitz of Germany by han-soku-make.

Progressing to the semi-final, the +78kg fighter faced Ukraine’s young talent Iryna Kinderska, who is ranked world number one in the junior rankings.

Both players received penalty points, but the Ukrainian kept the pressure on for an ippon win.

Commenting on the fight afterwards, Adlington said, “I didn’t know Kinderska was junior no.1 going into the fight. She was a big girl, but not unbeatable.”

Left to fight Zarina Abdrassulova of Kazakhstan for third place, Adlington took the upper hand, leading with a waza-ari to her opponent’s only yuko point. She then secured the bronze medal with an ippon score.

“It is always good to pick up a bronze after losing a semi-final and it felt good to fight in another World Cup.”

Adlington is placed 20th in World Rankings and recently took a gold medal on home soil at the British Open Championships.

Oates had a clean run through his four preliminary rounds, with a satisfying win over Russia’s Mikhail Pulyaev, who Oates has previously lost to.

Commenting on the fight, Oates said, “It was a tough fight against Pulyaev, I have fought him before and lost, so I was really pleased to beat him this time for a place in the semi final.”

The Brit then lost his semi-final fight to Hyon Kuk Hong (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) by ippon.

Left to fight Jun Hyun Cho of South Korea for the bronze medal, both players were penalised early on in the fight. Oates then went up a yuko point for his opponent’s second shido, but the fight ended with an ippon win for Cho.

Confident in his ability, Oates said, “I am starting to prove myself at a higher level and perform well on the World Circuit. In previous years I have produced some good results at ‘B’ Tournaments and I am now stepping up to the next level.”
