2011 British Championships set for iceSheffield as 695 judoka bid for domestic glory

The 2011 British Championships will see 695 of the country’s brightest young judo players compete at iceSheffield on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October.

Saturday will see the cadet boys and girls (born in 1996 and 1997) take to the mat along with the pre cadet boys (born in 1998 and 1999).

Sunday sees the junior men and women (born in 1993, 1994, 1994) join the pre cadet girls (born in 1998 and 1999) as they bid to be crowned British Champion.

2011 European Cadets Champion Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown will compete for British glory

The coveted domestic title is one of the greatest achievements a young judoka can accomplish in Britain and ensures high drama as hundreds of highly-promising judoka from the four home countries battle it out in the steel city.

Competitors in action on Saturday include reigning British Champion Eric Ham who moves up to the cadets field this year and also steps up a weight to -42kg.

Fellow 2010 gold medallist Ramazan Karimov, who triumphed as a pre cadet in the +66kg field last year, fights in the cadets version of the -81kg category.

On Sunday, Philip Awiti, the Portugal Junior European Cup winner, will compete in the -100kg category.

British Trials and Portugal Junior European Cup winner Freya Dechastelain tackles the -52kg category while 2011 European Cadets Champion Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown takes to the -63kg competition.
