The 2011 National Refereeing
Seminar attracted a very special guest as EJU Vice President and
former World Champion Daniel Lascau worked with the distinguished
delegates on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 July in Daventry.
The event attracted 55
delegates including BJA Lifetime Membership holder Roger Down
who become the first Briton to be awarded an honorary IJF A licence
by the European Judo Union and the International Judo Federation
Commission in a special presentation to open the seminar.

Daniel Lascau, who made
the presentation to Roger, was invited to lead demonstrations
on the mat on kumi-kata, transitions from standing to groundwork,
activity and passivity of fighters.
The opening presentation
invited delegates to watch the EJU training DVD of various examples
of competitive situations and to give their opinion to which Peter
Crumpton gave them the official interpretation.
The referees stepped onto
the mat to observe the demonstration from Daniel in how the referee
must take the time to appreciate what a player is trying to achieve
in kumi-kata and to have a practical demonstration of the situations
discussed from the DVD.

2011 National Referee Seminar delegates
During the afternoon more
mat demonstrations took place with Daniel, which allowed the referees
to experiment and feel the various changes in newaza and tachi-waza
situations, finishing with Keith Merrick showing further examples
from the EJU DVD.
On Sunday morning Dave
Stanley presented the final selection of situations from the training
DVD. Peter Crumpton and Keith Merrick then continued on the mat
demonstrating cross guard, leg grabs, negative and false attacks.
All delegates were invited to challenge and question the demonstrations
to ensure they clearly understood the referee’s perspective.
The feedback from the delegates
was extremely positive and they were particularly pleased to have
the opportunity to replicate the examples and have a true feel
for the situations to aid their understanding and development
as referees.
Meanwhile, seminar organiser
and IJA A referee Elaine Down, one of Britain’s foremost referee’s,
has been selected to take charge at the 2011 World Cadets Championships
in Kiev, Ukraine, next month.
The anticipated event marks
the introduction of a new rule by the IJF which will see white
judogi called to the mat first and will be in effect at all subsequent
IJF events.
