2011 Volunteer Awards Winners revealed

The 2011 Volunteer Award winners have been decided after a distinguished panel met to judge the impressive array of nominations across 12 categories.

This year’s panel were; Sophie Tobin, Sport England Senior Volunteer Manager, Margaret Nolan, Running Sports Partnership Development Manager, Dr Lisa Allan, LOCOG Judo Manager and Rowena Birch, BJA Board of Director who met with Elaine Down, BJA National Technical Officials Volunteer Development Officer to judge this year’s nominations.

A new online application process allowed for a significant increase of nominations throughout the UK, it was extremely pleasing for the panel to see nominations from every country in the UK and for the first time several from Jersey.

National Technical Officials Volunteer Development Officer Elaine Down said: “Each year that I have been involved, it never ceases to amaze me the overwhelming dedication and hard working volunteers we have in our sport. Each one has a story to tell and some have had to overcome huge personal hurdles along the way – but still they continue to volunteer their free time to judo”.

"The panel agreed their job would have been made so much easier if they could give each nomination an award as they were all of a very high calibre. By using the criteria of each category a decision was finally made – but not before each application was scrutinised again and again by the panel, as some of the decisions were so close”.

This year, the awards evening is being held at St Georges Hall, Liverpool on Saturday, 1 October which is an impressive venue and of huge cultural appeal.
