Four weeks to 2011 London British Open – world-ranked Canadian team signs up

With just under four weeks until the 2011 British Open at K2 Crawley, scores of high-quality international judoka are signing up to compete in the capital.

The two-day Senior European Cup event, which is licensed by the EJU, takes place on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May and promises to provide a taste of international competition in London ahead of the rapidly-emerging Olympics.

A four-strong, all-male Canadian squad will be in action across three weight categories

On the Saturday -66kg talent Sasha Mehedovic will be one to watch as he bids to claim his second medal in Britain.

Mehedovic, 26, took bronze at the GB World Cup in 2009, one of four occasions he’s been on the rostrum at a World Cup event.

The world number 27 has further pedigree at the highest stage as a three-time Pan American Championships bronze medallist, a major event in the Americas which is the equivalent of the European Championships.

A three-time Canadian u20 Champion, Mehedovic will be joined in -66kg action by the equally-accomplished Michal Popiel.

Popiel, 25, a three-time World Cup medallist, took bronze at the 2011 Pan American Championships in Mexico on 2 April after winning three of his four contests.

The world number 25 will be bidding to secure his first medal in Britain and shine alongside Mehedovic as the world-ranked pair battle for -66kg supremacy.

In the -73kg category, 26-year-old Nicholas Tritton will be one of the most experienced and lauded judoka in action.

The world number 9, who represented Canada in Beijing, is a nine-time World Cup medallist including a silver medal in Birmingham in 2009.

Tritton took bronze at the 2011 Pan American Championships to underline his status as one of the Americas’ finest judoka.

The final Canadian competitor is the emerging Antoine Valois-Fortier in the -81kg category.

Valois-Fortier, 21, the world number 48, has already compiled an enviable CV with four World Cup medals and 2011 Pan American Championships bronze illustrating his potential.

The Canadian team will join some of GB’s elite as entries continue to come in.
