Sheffield primed for 2011 English Senior Open

The 2011 English Senior Open, the first of four home country opens this year, will take centre stage at iceSheffield on Sunday 27 March.

Over 200 judoka will be in action with competitors ranging from blue belts to seasoned British internationals.

The event provides a unique opportunity for accomplished club judoka to battle some of the country’s finest judo practitioners including 2012 hopefuls. The English Senior Open promises to have a special atmosphere as club’s and team-mates turn out to support their colleagues.

As one of the first opportunities for British internationals to claim silverware this year, spectators will see 2010 British Open bronze medallists Colin Oates and James Millar in action.

2010 GB World Cup bronze medallist Sophie Cox and Gemma Gibbons, who took silver at the same event, will also battle in Sheffield.

As one of the highest domestic ranking points events of the year, judoka will be competing to establish themselves among the top eight on the senior ranking list to be invited to fight at the British Trials in January 2012,

A gold medal at the event will score a judoka 200 points, silver equates to 120 while bronze is worth 80 points. A fifth-place finish scores 40 points and a seventh-place finish sees a judoka receive 32 points. Winning one fight is worth 8 points.

Performance Director Margaret Hicks said: “We see the home country ranking tournaments - as well as the Area Ranking event - as very important in terms of building a competitive domestic pathway and in turn improving the numbers, depth and quality of players coming through the system.

“The home countries have a great opportunity to showcase and promote their event and there is a real focus now for players to compete for ranking points and get on the pathway to next year’s British Trials and a place on next year’s GB National Squad.

“This strategy is part of an overall plan to establish a strong underpinning standard of domestic judo across the home countries, to increase quality competition and provide a legacy coming through from the 2012 London Olympics to support the development of elite players in the future.”

Spectator tickets will otherwise cost £6 for adults and £3 for concessions, OAP’s and students with a valid NUS card.

On Sunday tickets can only be purchased at iceSheffield from the main foyer desk. The event will start at 10am at iceSheffield, Coleridge Road, S9 5DA.
