GB World Cup Day One Pools Report

Sophie Cox sealed a safe passage through to the semi-finals after winning her pool in the opening session of the 2010 GB World Cup in Birmingham.

The Manchester judoka, who returned to the sport in August after a five-year break, claimed the under 52kg pool.

In the under 48kg division Junior European Bronze medallist Freya Dechastelain put in a spirited effort against young Brazilian national medallist Cristiane Pereira before succumbing by ippon half way through her first contest.

Telford’s Kelly Edwards, 19, bowed out after losing to Poland’s Ewa Konieczny while Kimberley Renicks was toppled by Italy’s Valentina Moscatt. Francesca Steggall was defeated by Birgit Ente of the Netherlands.

In the under 52kg category Louise Renicks exited the event at the same stage as her sister Kimberley, having been bested by Shahar Levy of Israel. Stephanie Inglis lost to Germany’s Jacqueline Lisson while fellow Scot Samantha Clark was overcome by Finland’s Jaana Sundberg.

In the under 57kg category Connie Ramsay went out to China’s Yang Liu in the first round, a stage which also saw Londoner Nadia Minardi fall to Russia’s Olga Andreeva and Becky Dunning succumb to Canadian Stefanie Tremblay. Wolverhampton Judo Club star Gemma Howell defeated Finland’s Satu Lehikoinen and Germany’s Miriam Garmatter before losing a nail-biting quarter-final against French judoka Sarah Loko. The defeat saw Howell, who finished seventh in her maiden appearance at the World Championships last month, revert to the repechage.

The under 63kg division saw Kerry Ford lose out to Brazilian Camila Minakawa and Charlotte Potter was thwarted by Austrian Hilde Drexler, both first round fights. Jodie Mullen fell to American Christal Ransom.

Faith Pitman had a bye in the first round before defeating Portugal’s Ana Cachola. The Brit put in a tenacious effort against Slovenian Urska Zolnir who eventually triumphed over the home fighter as Pitman reverted to the repechage.
