Judo to cash in on £300k of grants - Sports Foundation invites applications for funding

Talented young judo players have from 18th January until 1st March to apply for a slice of £300,000 financial and training grants being offered by the GLL Sport Foundation in 2010.

Each of the successful applicants will benefit from funding of up to £1,750 to be spent on training, travel and equipment during the next 12 months or training awards that allow free sporting access to more than 70 sports facilities managed by not-for-profit leisure operator GLL.

To be eligible for a grant, sportsmen and women must reside or have a training base in a London or South East borough in which GLL operates; must have the long-term potential to succeed at International level, but primarily not be in receipt of UK Sport Funding. Financial awards may be used to fund the costs of training, competition, coaching and can be used to offset the costs of equipment, travel and accommodation.

The Foundation aims to give over £1.5m to young athletes in selected areas of London and the South of England in the run up to 2012. During the past year 650 sportsmen and women across more than 50 Olympic and Paralympic disciplines were supported. This year the number looks set to increase to around 800 athletes.
