McKenzie gold highlights Britain’s five medals at German European Cup

Ashley McKenzie stormed to a gold medal win as the British team captured five medals at the German European Cup in Hamburg on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August.

The gifted 21-year-old opened his account in the under 60kg class by overcoming Berend Werkman of the Netherlands. In the second round McKenzie scored one of the biggest wins of his career after seeing off Ludwig Paischer, Austria’s former two-time European Champion and 2008 Olympic silver medallist. That win was followed up by others over Israel’s Artium Arshansky and Yaakov Abetbool. McKenzie sealed one of the most memorable gold medals of his young career by besting Swiss fighter Ludovic Chammartin.

Megan Fletcher produced some fine displays in the under 70kg category to take a well-deserved silver medal. Fletcher had a bye in opening round before beating Switzerland’s Maite Eisner and Germany’s Laura Vargas Koch. Fletcher beat U23 European Champion, Maria Bernabeu of Spain, before taking the silver medal after losing out to former Olympic medalist Edith Bosch of the Netherlands in the final.

Bronze medals came from the talented female trio of Sally Conway, Gemma Howell and the returning Sophie Cox.

In the under 63kg division Gemma Howell defeated Germany’s Alice Schweinoch and then Germany’s Marion Weissensteiner before losing out to France’s Urska Zolnir. Howell beat France’s Rizlen Zouak, Germany’s Claudia Ahrens and Jennifer Wichers of the Netherlands to seal a bronze medal.

In under 52kg action was the returning Sophie Cox who had bye in first round. The 28-year-old, who had taken a break from competing since 2005, beat Germany’s Jessica Borchardt in the second round before slipping to Germany’s Susi Zimmermannin. In the repechage Cox beat Miranda Wolfslag of the Netherlands and Germany’s Jenny Nisser a to scoop an impressive bronze medal in her return to the international fold.

The final bronze medal come courtesy of under 70kg star Sally Conway who beat Luxembourg’s Lynn Mossong, Germany’s Melanie Gerber and Anne-Katrin Lisewski also of Germany. Conway lost the semi-final to Netherlands’ Edith Bosch who went on to win the gold medal. In the repechage Conway defeated German Laura Vargas Koch to seal a bronze medal.

Elsewhere under 60kg fighter Greg Varey beat Stef Oomen of the Netherlands before falling to Israel’s Yaakov Abetbool. Varey beat Brian-Miles Smith of Germany before he was bested by Tobias Englmaier, also of Germany.

James Millar fell to Mikos Salminen of the Netherlands in his opening fight.

In under 66kg action Sam Dunkley had a bye in the first round but lost out to Germany’s Adrian Kulisch in second round. In the repechage he lost out to Austria’s Andreas Mitterfellner.

In the under 73kg division Germany’s Norbert Fleischer defeated Brit Iain Feenan.

Lee Shinkin overcome Czech fighter Micha Vanicek ahead of losing out to Moldova's Marcel Trudov. In the repachage he swept past Germany's Stefan Friedrich before falling to Germany's Karl Schoneburg.

Jerome Robinson-Reid bowed out after losing his first contest to Norway's Martin Thiblin.

Daniel Williams triumphed over David Miccoli of the Netherlands before losing to Israel’s Ioseb Palelashvili.

Colin Oates defeated Neal V. D. Kamer and Dmytro Sheretov before coming undone against Germany’s Karl Schöneburg.

Patrick Dawson lost his opening fight to German Soshin Katsumi.

In the under 81kg division Tom Davis beat Vitaliy Dudchyk before losing out to Germany’s Robert Conrad.

Tom Reed beat Milan Bürges of Hungary and Germany’s Niklas Ebert before falling to Belgium’s Joachim Bottieau. Reed bounced back in the repechage by pulling off wins against Iceland’s Birgir Omarsson and Swiss fighter Jonathan Jaquet. He lost to the bronze medal fight to Robert Gess of Germany.

After a bye in the first round Craig Stewart defeated Germany’s Daniel Falk before being overcome by Arisar Sheinmann of Israel.

Adam Bick got the better of Czech fighter Tomas Muzik in his first contest but lost his second to Tom Rouwers.

David Groom defeated Ukraine’s Vitalii Popovych, Germany’s Alexander Hampfe and Moldova’s Radu Gincu before losing the semi-final to German Robert Gess. Groom lost to Gemany’s Sven Maresch in the repechage.

In under 90kg action Winston Gordon bested Dominik Wenzinger of Switzerland before losing to Sweden’s European Champion Marcus Nyman. Gordon returned to winning ways in the repechage as he beat Germany’s Frank Dedek and fellow Brit Michael Horley before being edged out by Ukraine’s Roman Gontiuk.

Michael Horley beat Iceland’s Saevar Robertsson, and Germans Erik Wagner and Maksym Chykurda before tasting defeat against Sweden’s Marcus Nyman.

Andrew Burns lost his opening fight to Slovakia’s Milan Randl. In the repechage Burns beat Germans Oliver Zabel and Florian Germroth before coming up short against Ukraine’s Roman Gontiuk.

Luke Taylor lost his opening contest to Finland’s Samuel Mäki.

In the under 100kg division James Austin won through against Iceland’s Ingthor Valdimarsson and the Nertherlands’ Jelle V.D. Berg. Austin entered the repechage after a defeat to Moldova’s Stanislav Cernega where he lost out to Stefan Krause.

In under 48kg action Kimberley Renicks lost her first fight to Vanessa Garcia of Spain.

Francesca Steggall lost her first outing to Spain’s Aida Sarmiento and lost out in the repechage to Ukraine’s Olha Sukha.

In under 52kg action Louise Renicks lost to Germany’s Jacqueline Lisson in her first fight having had a bye in the opening round. Renicks beat Nikki Pluymaekers of the Netherlands in the repechage but lost to eventual bronze medallist, Holland’s Miriam Polak.

Siobhan O’Neil lost to German Jenny Nisser in her opening contest.

In under 57kg action Rebecca Dunning lost to France’s Tiffany Fraiderik after a bye in the first round

Connie Ramsey had a bye in the first and second round before falling to eventual bronze medallist Sandy Nisser of Germany. In the repechage Ramsey defeated Spain’s Fatima Ribot before losing out to Germany’s Viola Wächter who went on to capture a bronze medal.

Faith Pitman beat Germany’s Julia Malcherek in her opening fight and then Austria’s Hilde Drexler before losing to the Netherlands’ Jennifer Wichers who finished the tournament in fifth place. In the repechage Pitman lost to Japan’s Tomoko Kumamoto.

Scarlet Woolcock lost to Spain’s Maria Bernabeu in her opening fight. Woolcock defeated Germany’s Julia Dorny in the repechage but then fell to Barbara Bandel, also of Germany.

In over 78kg action Sarah Adlington lost her first fight to Carola Uilenhoed of the Netherlands. In the repechage Adlington defeated Germany’s Melanie Gasch and Gerdien Kupers of the Netherlands before falling to Slovenia’s Lucija Polavder in the bronze medal fight.
