Five medals for Great Britain at 2009 German Open

Great Britain finished third in the medal table out of the 22 nations that took part in the 2009 German Open, winning five medals. Russia topped the medal table followed by the hosts Germany.

Sally Conway (-70kg), who won bronze at last year’s German Open in 2008, took the only GB gold medal. Conway stormed through to the final beating Kazakhstani Marian Urdabayeva, lljana Marzok and Barbara Bandel of Germany in the early rounds, to then beat Linda Bolder of the Netherlands in the final.

Kimberley Rennicks performed well and beat two Russians and Romanian Olympic Champion Alina Dumitru in the early rounds of the -48kg contest, but lost to Wasilisa Prill of Germany in the final and had to settle for silver.

The only male player from the GB team to reach the rostrum was Ashley McKenzie, who took the -60kg silver medal. McKenzie fought hard in his first rounds beating Thomas Cadoux Duc of France in the first round, Senne Wyns of Belgium in the second round, Amrian Papainasahvili of Georgia in the semis but lost to Beslan Mudranov of Russia in the final.

Britain won two medals in the +78kg weight category - bronze medals from GB’s Karina Bryant and Sarah Adlington.

Bryant defeated a German and two Russian players in the early rounds before meeting Tea Donguzashvili in the semi. Bryant, who has beaten Donguzashvili twice in European Championship finals, faced her rival once again but lost and took the bronze medal.

Adlington also lost her semi final against 2009 European gold medallist Elena Ivashchrnko of Russia to take the second bronze. Adlington beat Christina Krahe and Franziska Konitz of Germany before facing Ivashchrnko in the semis.

Other results from the GB team saw Colin Oates take 5th place, Winston Gorden 5th place, Tom Reed 7th Place, Andrew Burns 7th place, Sarah Clark 7th place and Lindsay Purves 7th place.
