Gymnastics for Judo entered
the Southern region as Wycombe Judo Centre (National Home Counties)
staged the course on Sunday 6 February.
The course represents
one of six modules on the National Governing Body's new Judo Fitness
award for coaches which is part of the Shape for Success initiative.
Other modules include flexibility for judo, strength and condition
and the new fitness class Judo Fit.
Chris Doherty, British
Judo’s South East Technical Officer, took the course alongside
former gymnast Lisa Houston.
“We had a good response
to the course and everyone really worked hard,” said 5th Dan Doherty.
“The course will now
be an annual event in the Southern Area and we expect the event
to grow every year as it becomes an annual attraction.”
Gymnastics
for judo is designed to develop good body control and awareness
in younger players.
British
Judo’s Widening the Market Manager Joyce Heron said: “The aim
is to utilise gymnastic activities and processes to enable young
players to perform more efficiently, technically and competitively
in our sport, from grassroots through to future elite level.
“Judo
is a very demanding sport which requires a player to develop various
physical attributes in order to perform to their potential be
it at a recreational or competitive level.
“The
award will endeavour to work with coaches and instructors to raise
the physical standards of the judo players while under their tuition,
to help them avoid unnecessary injury and enable them to practise
or compete optimally at their particular level.”
