Hull’s South Holderness
Technology College retained the coveted British Schools Championships
title on Saturday 26 March 2011.
The impressive College
topped the medal table after scoring 20 points to edge East Lothian’s
North Berwick High School by the most slender of margins, the
second-placed Scots scoring 19 points.
South Holderness picked
up three medals from six entrants, all the medallists being members
of Karen Briggs MBE’s School of Judo.
Zoe Hebden led the way
as she took gold for the second consecutive year by surging to
victory in the year 8 and 9’s -57kg category.
Brother Thomas Hebden and
Tamsin Hartley both took silver in the year 10 and 11’s -60kg
and -52kg categories respectively.
Tanith Spencer took fifth
in the year 6 and 7’s -52kg category while Thomas Booth bowed
out of the year 10 and 11’s -52kg category at the preliminary
stage.
In the same age band Sam
Raper exited the -73kg category in the opening round.
Coach Karen Briggs said:
“All South Holderness’ players fought well and we had three medallists
from our judo club.
“It’s excellent to win
the trophy again, we said last year we wanted to keep the trophy
and we have, that shows we’re maintaining our standards.
“Our judo club focuses
on work ethic and everyone puts in a tremendous amount of effort
which is all I and the coaches ask for.”
Jeff Hynds, British Judo’s
Yorkshire and Humberside Development Officer, said: “South Holderness
and Karen have once again shone at the event and set the bar for
judo at this competition.
“Over 400 judoka took part
from schools right across the country so it’s a really magnificent
achievement for them.”
