Pennyhill Park hosts the first ever Judo Ashes

On Friday 21st August as the Ashes Cricket Series draws to a close, the five-star Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot, Surrey, together with the Camberley Judo Club, will be hosting a charity gala dinner with a difference.

After a glittering champagne reception, guests will be treated to a bit of healthy British vs Aussie competition as Olympic hopefuls from the Camberley Judo Club and the Australian World Judo team compete against each other.

After a judo display and a light-hearted briefing on the rules and scoring of judo, there will a be a series of exciting ‘contests’ throughout the evening featuring judo stars such as Samantha Lowe (2002 Commonwealth Champion), Nathan Burns (represented Great Britain at the 2009 Junior World Championships) and Danny Williams (also represented GB at the Junior Worlds) from the British Camp and Brent Iverson and Emily Bensted from the Australian National Squad.

Two famous faces will be lending their support to the Charity, notably local Surrey resident and renowned actor Brian Blessed (who also just happens to be a 3rd Dan) and long time friend of Pennyhill Park Hotel and former England Rugby Head Coach, Clive Woodward. Camberley’s Olympian and two-time junior World Champion Karina Bryant will also be attending the gala dinner.

Camberley Judo Club has had a long and positive association with the Australian’s National Team, as well as individual athletes preparing for major events with members at the Camberley Club over many years. The Australian team will be over here in the UK from the 17th August training at the club in preparation for the World Judo Championships taking place in Rotterdam the following week.

The Judo Ashes came about when Camberley Judo Club’s Mark Earle and Managing Director of Pennyhill Park, Danny Pecorelli, were thinking of fundraising ideas for the ‘Going for Gold Charity’. With a little encouragement from Camberley’s Luke Preston, a friend of Australian team manager Colin Hill, they were happy to get involved.

Tickets are £70 per person or £600 for a table of 10 with all proceeds going to the ‘Going for Gold Charity’ which was formed in 2008 to help develop the Judo Club and other sports clubs in the county. (Camberley Judo Club – Registered Charity Number: 1130119).
