Britain’s junior Special Needs team dominates in Holland

Britain’s junior Special Needs team stole the show at the Beverwijk G-Judo Championships on 9 April in Holland as they picked up nine medals.

The nine-strong team were part of a field of 366 competitors who were representing 15 countries and 47 judo clubs.

Competition categories were made up according to age, weight, judo level and special requirements.

Britain won four gold medals through Calum Gach, Aaron James, Nicole James and Owen Kelly.

Silver medals went to Liam Lister, Thomas Mawdsley and Alexander Sawyer-Copus while two of the bronze variety were secured by Adam Pope and Luke Taylor.

One youngster, Scott Bennett, even competed in the senior field.

Susan Kirkpatrick, Junior GB Coach and a member of the British Judo Association’s Inclusion Commission, said: “Simon Williams (coach) and I were extremely proud of the attitude and determination of every member of the team, they displayed the true spirit of judo throughout the day and secured some impressive results.

“For some of the squad, it was their first time representing GB and competing abroad. We had three GB junior players in the same category who managed to win the top three medals.

“The team were very proud to wear their GB team t-shirts and tops and they looked very smart together.

“Well done to everyone involved with the support and organisation of the trip, it was extremely successful and motivating for everyone involved, especially the players.”
