Search for future Paralympic stars comes to the South-West

ParalympicsGB today called out to Paralympic hopefuls to attend their next talent day, designed to find people in the South-West who have the determination to become members of the British Paralympic team for London 2012 and Rio 2016 and who want to emulate the success of Paralympians such as Dorset ’s Darren Kenny and Newquay’s Matthew Whorwood.

The University of Bath , which was announced as the venue for the GB team’s pre-London 2012 training camp last year, will host the Paralympic Potential day on Wednesday May 12, 2010.

The University is the main training base for several Paralympians including gold medallist swimmer Liz Johnson and silver medallist sprinter Ben Rushgrove, while several South-West based Paralympians such as Kenny, Whorwood, and Taunton ’s Lucy Shuker competed for Britain in Beijing .

“The South-West has a fine tradition of providing the British Paralympic team with outstanding athletes, so we know that there is a lot of talent in this area of the country. We are calling out to anyone who thinks they might be talented, to sign up for the day on our website ( www.paralympics.org.uk )”, said ParalympicsGB Chief Executive Phil Lane .

“This is fantastic opportunity for anyone who thinks they have what it takes to be a Paralympian”, he added.

Applicants should fulfil the following criteria:

•  have an impairment

•  be a UK passport holder (or eligible for one)

•  age between 13 and 38

•  involvement in regular physical activity

•  a competitive nature and desire to medal at the Paralympic Games

The day will see successful applicants put through their paces by GB coaches from a variety of Paralympic sports, enabling attendees to try several sports.

ParalympicsGB have held several talent ID days previously, and they have proven successful so far with between 40-50% of attendees being identified as having talent and several of these individuals already excelling in their sports.

2012 sponsor Cadbury are supporting the talent day and are supplying employee volunteers on the day.

Anybody wishing to sign up for the day should go to the ParalympicsGB website ( www.paralympics.org.uk ) and go to the ‘Talent’ section. The deadline for applications is April 25, 2010.
