Adlington ends in fifth-place at IJF Rotterdam GP

Sarah Adlington took a hard-fought fifth-place at the IJF Rotterdam GP on Sunday 17 October.

The 24-year-old, who captured a bronze medal at the GB World Cup a fortnight ago, lined-up in an all-star over 78kg field.

Among the strong category were France’s five-time European Champion Anne-Sophie Mondiere, 2008 Junior European Champion Gulsah Kocaturk of Turkey and Italy’s 2009 European u23 Champion Lucia Tangorre.

Adlington, who hails from Bayston Hill, Shrewsbury, had a bye in the first round which set-up a showdown with Gerdien Kupers of the Netherlands.

Going into the bout the Edinburgh-based fighter held a 100 percent record over the 22-year-old former national champion as Adlington bested her at this year’s British Open and European Cup in Hamburg.

A win saw the Briton go three-for-three against Kupers and book a place in the pool final against Turkish star Gulsah Kocaturk.

Adlington lost out to the 2009 European Championships bronze medallist which saw her finish in fifth spot while her conqueror went on the claim the gold medal.

On Friday Adlington’s team-mates Gemma Howell, Colin Oates and Ashley McKenzie were in action.

While Howell and Oates were eliminated at the pool stage, London’s McKenzie produced two victories to take fifth-place.
