This
Saturday (20th March) Sheffield will host the 2010 British
Schools Judo National Individual Championships, a development
event for secondary school children aged 12 – 17-years-old.
The
Championships, which has been running for over 40 years, are being
held at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield for the second
year with a capacity entry. 300 competitors will take to the mat
at the one-day event with 58 titles to be won across the age groups
and weight categories.
Representatives
from throughout England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales
will travel to Sheffield to compete, with just one of the young
hopefuls from Sheffield competing closer to home.
The
medalists will be invited to attend the England regional training
sessions organised by British Judo’s England Performance Team.
In
2007 the British Schools Judo Association was incorporated into
the British Judo Association, after a recommendation from the
National Council for School Sports.
Following
on from this, the British Judo Events Team has been given the
privilege to run the Championships, together with the British
Schools Commisson, for the first time ever.
Both
the British Schools Judo Commission and the BJA, are delighted
to receive such a positive response to the online entry system
with such a high number of competitors.
BSJ Chairman,
Malcolm Collins said, “This event creates the chance for those
who are not on the squads or medalled at the British Championships
to compete against others from across the country.
“It
is really positive for young people to build some confidence and
for those in the later years to come through,” he added.
Streamed
live from the British Judo website, video footage of two mats
at the event will be able to be watched from your computer on
