London’s financial heavyweights
were left in awe after a judo demonstration from two young British
stars highlighted the latest Bloomsbury Club meeting at the British
Medical Association House in Tavistock Square on 9 July.
The club features 50
members and is made up solicitors, financers and bankers who come
together three times a year to raise money for the Sports Aid
who provides financial support to Britain’s budding athletes
The charity is a vital aid in easing
the process of young talent moving from grassroots to the international
stage, SportsAid has donated £30 million to youngsters aged 12
to 18, from around 50 able-bodied and 25 disability sports.
Their sterling efforts
are gracefully received by the British Judo Association’s England
Squad Administrator, Trevor Sitlinton, who put together the judo
demonstration from Luke Taylor and Ben Fletcher.
“SportsAid is really good to us and
they’ve been long-time supporters to our talented youngsters,”
he said.
“The demo Luke and Ben
put on was brilliant, they were throwing each other for 30 minutes
and going throw for throw. They’re big guys and when there was
an audible gasp when they started working.
“Everyone put £5 forward
and the winner received a quarter of the pot while the rest went
to SportsAid.”
SportsAid is due to launch a new project
with Jaguar and a highly-touted British prospect is set to receive
funding.
“18-year-old Owen Livesey,
from SKK Judo Club in St Helens, the brother of cadets Amy and
Bekky, is going to receive £2,000 funding from the new project
which will be huge for him,” added Sitlinton.
