The funeral of Wales’ 50-year
judo stalwart, Steadman Davies from Llanelli, saw hundreds of
mourners turn out to pay their last respects.
Davies, who recently celebrated
his 85 th birthday, was introduced to the Olympic sport in the
Far East, where he served during the Second World War.
Young judoka and more experienced
players followed the hearse in a special procession, dressed in
judo gear, to Llanelli Crematorium.
The judo pioneer’s dedication
to the sport earned him an MBE on St David's Day in 2002 which
was presented to him in Cardiff Castle by Prince Charles.
Gareth Rees, of Sanshirokwai
Dojo, led the tributes to his revered compatriot.
“Steadman’s ability as
a martial arts teacher and sports coach is unquestioned and over
the majority of time of Sanshirokwai Dojo’s existence the club
has been noted for widespread medal successes in both Wales and
the UK.
“His contribution to these
sporting achievements was formally recognised in the early 1990’s
when he was presented with the Torch Trophy Trust Award by the
Duke of Gloucester and later in 2002 when he received the MBE.”
Rees added:”Steadman will
be deeply missed and never forgotten by all who were fortunate
enough to know him.”
