Women and Girls Initiative

Registration open for second Women and Girls conference

Registration is open for British Judo’s second Women and Girls conference which will take place on Saturday 26 February across two venues.

The aim of the event is to bring women and girls together, to explore opportunities which will contribute to an increase in female participation in all areas of the sport.

The morning session will take place at the Village Hotel in Walsall while the afternoon session will be held at Our Lady and St Chad’s Catholic Sports College in Wolverhampton.

Over the next four years the British Judo Association is committed to promoting, developing and supporting women and girl’s participation in the judo.

British Judo can be justly proud of the achievements of females in the sport. There are many excellent female role models both past and present within judo and it is important to recognise them, celebrate their achievements and learn from their examples.

After the success of last year’s event, we are looking forward to another year where female judoka will come together to share their judo experiences. There is a wealth of excellent abilities, high achievements and experience out there. We would like to present this to you in an interactive way through presentations and mat based sessions.

All Women and Girls involved in judo over 14 years of age welcome.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

WOMEN AND GIRL’S INITIATIVE: Joyce Heron - BJA Widening the Market Manager

Joyce will provide an overview of what impact Women and Girl’s Initiative projects have had on participation within the British Judo Association.

THE ROLE OF CLUBS IN RETAINING GIRLS IN SPORT: Cassie Smith- Women Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF)

WSFF will share with us the recent research and examples of how clubs can influence the retention of girls. The club has an important role to play in both recruiting and retaining girls in sport. Creating quality club environments that can retain our female judo players will be important in helping the BJA to reach their higher participation level targets.

UPDATE ON 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES: Dr Lisa Allan - Judo Manager 2012 Olympic Games

There is increasing excitement in Britain as the 2012 London Olympics approach. Now that we are now less than two years away from the Olympic Games, Lisa will provide an overview of the judo venue, event details, logistics and volunteering opportunities.

THE OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE: Rachel Clift - Olympic Bronze Medallist - Hockey

The Olympic Dream is what motivates many sports people to push by through many barriers in order to achieve their ultimate goal. Rachel will share her own unique Olympic experience with us.

MY LIFE IN JUDO: Sarah Biles - British Judo Association Young Volunteer

One of Britain’s bright young ‘volunteers of the year’ from Samurai Judo Club (Kidderminster) looks forward to volunteering at the 2012 London Olympic Games. She will discuss how she became involved in refereeing and table officiating, and the impacted this has had on her life as a young person who also competes in the sport.

FUNDRAISING FOR WOMEN'S CHARITIES: Carol Doherty -Women and Girls Action Group

Carol, a 4th Dan in judo, will share her own unique story of how as a breast cancer sufferer she has participated in many fundraising events to contribute to cancer research. She will talk about her plans to complete a 400km cycle ride in Kenya, and this year’s British Judo ‘race for life’ project.

OPEN FORUM: Colin McIver BJA Technical Director and Joyce Heron - BJA Widening the Market Manager

Conference delegates have their opportunity to ask questions to a select panel of our speakers.

JUDO - ON THE MAT: Loretta Cusack, Ann Fry-Hughes and Claire McDonald - Former Internationalists

Our mat based session is an excellent opportunity to gain from the experience of our two ex-international female players. Loretta and Ann will focus on the technical aspects, with Claire focusing on unique judo to music (JudoFit). As this is a mat based session, candidates are reminded to bring their judogi – we recognise that not everyone participates as a judo player, there is no pressure to participate and a spectator’s area is available.

MORNING SESSION: Village Hotel, Tempus Drive, Off Junction 10, M6, Walsall WS2 8TJ

AFTERNOON SESSION: Our Lady and St Chad’s Catholic Sports College, Wolverhampton WV10 8BL
