Jan Gosiewski defeats 2010 World bronze medalist at World University Games

The University of Bath’s Jan Gosiewski stunned 2010 World bronze medalist Yasuhiro Awano from Japan en route to a fifth-place finish at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

The -73kg judoka caught the eye as he reeled off wins against Mongolian Myagmarsuren Dashnyam, Hungarian Ervin Horvath and Chinese judoka Yang Wenchago. Gosiewski narrowly lost out in the quarter-finals to Korea’s former world junior champion Kim Won-Jung.

In the repechage the British Trials silver medalist produced one of the biggest wins of his career as he toppled Japan’s 2010 World bronze medallist and world number eight Yasuhiro Awano.

In the bronze medal contest a battling Gosiewski lost out to Brazilian Marcel Contini.

"I’m feeling a whole cocktail of emotions at the moment,” said the Briton.

"A lot of really good things come out of the competition for me, I won four of my six fights and overall I was fighting well. I felt good but it was offset by how close I got to a medal.”

British Judo Development Coach Darren Warner, who's leading Britain's judo delegation in China, said: “Jan done very well in beating fighters from Hungary, Mongolia, China and Japan.”
