Hundreds of school children
tried their hand at a host of Olympic sports at Newham Leisure
Centre on Wednesday 4 May as British Triathlon staged the year’s
first Tata Kids of Steel mini-triathlon event.
The hugely popular triathlon
series saw 900 children from 26 local schools swim, cycle and
run their way around their very first triathlon. A host of other
Olympic sports were also present to offer taster sessions including
judo, badminton, boxing and athletics.
Nicole Nunn, British Judo’s
East London Development Coach, led taster sessions with community
club coaches Wayne Melville and Howard Clarke-Melville from Stratford
Judo Club as well as Debbie Ringer from A1 Newham College Judo
Club.
Over 300 children took
part in the judo sessions and showed great enthusiasm for the
sport which has a ‘judo for all’ motto.

“Staging taster sessions
at the event was a fantastic opportunity for British Judo to engage
more young people in the sport and make them aware of the all
the benefits and challenges of the sport.
“We have already been asked
to attend another “Kids of Steel” event in Willesden in June and
are hoping for the same success.
“Children from Fairlop
Primary school were so taken with the sport that they have already
contacted us to work with them during National Sports week and
to access local clubs.
“I think this event is
a perfect example of the success we can achieve at a local level
when we work together with other sporting NGB’s to create a fun
day for children, clubs and coaches.”
