Bronze for Gemma at 2007 Vienna World Cup for Women

Wolverhampton’s Gemma Howell has won a bronze medal, in the –57kg weight category, at the 2007 Vienna World Cup for Women at the weekend.

It is the first World Cup medal for the 16-year-old who has made an impact at a senior level over the last year winning gold at the 2006 Senior British Closed Championships, and bronze at the 2007 Senior British Open Championships in January.

In Vienna, Gemma best German Anne Kaetzler, the experienced Valerie Gotay of the USA, and Ketleyn Lima Quadros of Brazil in the pool, before losing to Erdenet Khishigbat of Mongola, the eventual gold medallist, in the semi final. This left her in the bronze medal match against junior World silver medallist, Viola Waechter of Germany. Howell took her place on the medal rostrum after disposing of the German with the maximum ippon score.

Also at the weekend Lee Shinkin (Willesden JC) placed 7th at the 2007 Budapest World Cup for Men.

The next tournament on the curcuit is the Hamburg Super World Cup, which will take place next weekend (24th-25th February).  Britain will have two competitors, Tom Reed in the -73kg weight category and Tom Davies in the -81kg weight category.  26 players will take part in the Hamburg International Training Camp, which takes after the tournament from the 26th February until the 1st March.
