ENGLAND IN ACTION AT THE COMMONWEALTH JUDO TOURNAMENT

England will also be action away from the football field this weekend at the Commonwealth Judo Tournament in Derry, Northern Ireland.

The Commonwealth Judo Tournament takes place every two years, except when judo is featured in the Commonwealth Games.

At the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, England enjoyed a judo medal haul of 13 medals – eight of which were gold. However, the sport was not included in Melbourne 2006 earlier this year.

Sixteen Commonwealth countries will take part in the tournament including New Zealand, Australia, Mauritius, Kenya, Uganda, Malta, and Canada.

In Derry, 2006 European bronze medallist Peter Cousins will compete in the –100kg weight category. While current British Open Champion, Bobby Rich will represent England in the –-90kg category.

Simone Callender who won gold in the +78kg weight category at the Manchester Commonwealth Games features in the line up. As does Kellie Roberts in the –63kg spot, a category in which her sister Karen holds the title having won gold in Manchester in 2002.

Sian Wilson should also be a medal hope in the –78kg weight category after winning a bronze medal in April at the 2006 Fighting Films GB World Cup in Birmingham.

In addition to the senior competition, there will also be a junior event (under 21 years old).

England Team Manager, Barry James said, “England enjoyed huge success in Manchester, which we hope to emulate in Derry this weekend”.
