The BJA and
Youth Sport Trust (YST) is concerned that the profile of technical
sports officials such as judges, referees and scorers is ageing
and that there is currently no formalised structure for enabling
young people to take up these roles. Supported by V Funding and
National Governing Bodies, the Youth Sport Trust have taken initial
steps towards addressing this.
Since June
2007 the Youth Sport Trust has developed nine young officials’s
awards, created by full time volunteers working directly within
nine NGB’s. Our target to recruit, train and deploy 100 16-19
year old technical officials by June 2008 is on schedule, and
we are confident that this will be exceeded.
Formal structures enabling
young people to progress pathways to be successful sports performers
and coaches have already been established in England. We believe
that it is now essential to create a complimentary structure for
technical sports officials through our Young Officials Programme.
It is important that we build on the success of year one and embed
the awards that have been created into school sport so that young
people can step on to the officiating pathway.
We are now looking
to recruit a volunteer to undertake an amazing opportunity as
a Young Official Development Officer to further develop the existing
BJA officiating awards.
