Kumikata (methods of gripping)

The grip is the tool for applying forces to the opponent.

Effective grip allows for attack and provides a defence. Whilst the modern performance judo favours a great variety of grips, most of which best serve different tactics and crafty strategies of both opponents, the fundamental grip (sleeve-lapel) continues to appear effective for all purposes (as being proved by the proponents of conventional Judo in the strenuous contests against representatives of unorthodox Judo).
