Stance (posture)

Upright stance is unarguably considered to be the fundamental technical principle of positive Judo, a one rich in its content: free-going, explosive, unexpected, surprising, intelligent, creative, effective and efficient.

To retain the balanced state of the body and a full view of the opponent and the situation, SHIZEN HON TAI (upright positive stance) is essential to the judo we wish to cultivate.

Such posture is conducive to the “functional freedom” of the human body.

It determines the mechanical equilibrium which is attainable though the aligning of the whole body as a lever of one unit with the pelvic as its centre.

The power of the pelvic region ( TANDEN ) is the major force of the whole body mechanics, vital for both maintaining one’s own and destroying an opponent’s balance.
